The name ‘Baptist’ was once a mocking term used to deride Christians who follow the practice of ‘believer’s baptism’ – the public baptism of individuals who have made a decision to follow Christ -- rather than baptizing infants and children who have not made this conscious choice. Today, more than 110 million Baptists world-wide distinguish themselves from other Christians by highlighting this focal practice. For some, the name Baptist is even more significant because it is the only denominational name with its origin in a Biblical practice and language. Check your Bible and you won’t find other denominational names -- Anglican, Mennonite, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Alliance and Catholic, Greek Orthodox etc. – which come from the names of founders, national origins or styles of government. |
